Waseskun Healing Center

Waseskun is a Cree word referring to the time just after a storm, when the dark clouds begin to part, the blue sky appears, and the first rays of sunlight shine through.

Waseskun is a healing center dedicated to assisting Aboriginal men on their healing journeys. Not all men come to Waseskun from the courts or prison system. Many are referred directly from social or community services for long-term intensive treatment related to drug and alcohol abuse, family violence, sexual abuse issues, anger and stress management, and other community or family concerns.

Incorporated in July of 1988, Waseskun originated as a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, receiving residents from the Native court on the nearby Kahnawake reserve. Shortly after, Waseskun signed a contract with the provincial and federal governments accepting residents from the prison system.

Today, the original spirit and commitment to healing of the early volunteers remains. Waseskun is still a non-profit organization, controlled by a Board of Directors made up of community-based Aboriginal people.

The Waseskun Healing Center is based on helping individuals regain balance in their lives by promoting changes in negative lifestyle patterns. Waseskun uses holistic teachings that emphasize the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional aspects of individuals, while offering residential services that reflect Native spirituality, traditions and values. Located in the foothills of the Laurentians, in the Lanaudiere region of Quebec, Waseskun provides a secluded and natural setting for residents to take the next step on their individual healing paths.

Elders and Helpers offer their knowledge through teachings, programs, ceremonies and celebrations. Programs offered include: drug and alcohol addiction, family violence, sexuality and healthy relationships, healing circles, sweat lodges, individual counseling, anger management, conflict resolution, physical and spiritual balance, grieving and life skills. Waseskun also offers extensive programs such as “In Search of Your Warrior,” the “Waseya Program” and Literacy Training, designed to re-integrate individuals back into their communities.

Healing is not done in isolation. Waseskun, besides being a community within itself, also offers intensive residential family therapy to include the resident’s family, with the support of the community, in the healing process.

Human beings are capable of change. Waseskun believes that as long as they have a sincere desire to change, everyone deserves another chance. In the words of a Helper, “Waseskun flows in the realm and energy of wellness, healing and medicine. There is not one element missing. Everything required to promote and enhance healing is present.”
